World of Warcraft: Midnight Season 2 arrives with Patch 12.1, “Curse of Ula’tek,” and its centerpiece is an eight-boss raid built around Zul’jan’s meddling with an ancient Amani weapon. The raid is still on the PTR as of this writing, with Season 2 expected roughly a week after the patch goes live. For guild leaders and pug regulars alike, the gearing rules around this raid look nothing like Season 1’s system.

Loot distribution changed enough that many players pre-order a Venomous Abyss raid boost before Season 2 even opens. Here is a closer look at how the new LFR wings, bonus rolls, and world content reshape the way gearing works this season.

Three LFR Wings, Not a Free-for-All

Raid Finder access follows a staggered structure across three wings, each opening roughly a week apart. This is the standard late-patch model. However, the boss grouping changes what pugs should prioritize.

  • Essence of Ula’tek — Nek’zali the Soulcoiler, Entombed Sentinels, Vashnik the Malignant
  • Beasts of Ula’tek — The Lost Explorers, Sszorak, The Twin Fangs
  • Ula’tek — The Coiled Altar, Ula’tek

Pug groups will not see the last boss until the third week of LFR access. The first wing is better in week one, as Entombed Sentinels will drop the hand tokens and Vashnik will drop the chest token. Both are good early targets. The helm and leg tokens are unlocked in week two with Sszorak and The Twin Fangs. The class token is unlocked only after The Coiled Altar, and Ulatek is unlocked in week three.

Bonus Rolls Just Got Cheaper

Season 1 charged two Nebulous Voidcores for a raid bonus roll and one for everything else. Season 2 reduces that raid cost to one Voidcore, equivalent to Mythic+, Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunts. Voidcores will also be purchasable straight from the Great Vault interface from week one, skipping Season 1’s multi-week unlock chain.

The core mechanic stays the same. A bonus roll gives a random item from that activity’s pool, weighted toward your loot specialization. Once you have received a specific item through a Voidcore roll at a given difficulty, it drops out of your future roll pool there, though it can still drop normally from the boss itself.

That lower price changes the calculus of tier farming. Season 1 required a decision between two raid rolls or four Mythic+ rolls. Season 2 allows you to use the same currency on both. A player who is short on tier gloves can roll Entombed Sentinels during week one and bank the rest during the class token of Ula’tek when the last wing opens.

Instanced World Content on Coiled Isle

Patch 12.1 moves world-boss-style encounters into Lairs. These are fully instanced locations scaling from 15 to 25 players, with difficulty options up to Mythic. There is no longer a line to wait in or a group to race to get tag credit. You call the encounter and fight it at your own pace.

Coiled Isle also brings a new season of Prey, Blizzard’s roaming-hunt content, with fresh targets and affixes layered atop the zone’s public events. Players receive consistent gear between Lairs and Prey, which can be used by alts who require an item-level floor before their initial Heroic clear.

Mythic+ Feeds the Same Loot Pool

The new Altar of Fangs dungeon has been added to the Mythic+ rotation, alongside seven returning dungeons, such as Murder Row and King’s Rest. Because Mythic+ keys also feed the Great Vault and generate Voidcores at the same one-currency price as raid content, a good M+ week can directly offset a raid bonus roll in the future. That link did not exist in Season 1, where raid rolls cost double. Thus, a strong M+ week can subsidize a raid bonus roll later.

Planning the First Three Weeks

Mapping Voidcore spending against the wing schedule turns a chaotic opener into a simple checklist. Here is how the first three weeks should break down:

  • Week one — clear the Essence of Ula’tek wing, farm Lairs and Prey for alt gear, and start banking Voidcores.
  • Week two — add the Beasts of Ula’tek wing, and spend saved Voidcores on missing tier slots.
  • Week three — push into the Ula’tek wing for the class token and Mythic-track trinkets.

Blizzard has not locked exact unlock dates yet. However, the wing structure and currency changes are already confirmed on the PTR.

The Bottom Line

Venomous Abyss changes more than boss names and loot tables. LFR wings, cheaper Voidcores, and instanced world content turn Season 2 into a system players can plan around, not just react to. Guilds that map their currency early will out-gear everyone still farming blind by week three.
